Barbara Parus is a versatile and well-established writer, editor and editorial consultant with experience that spans three decades. A Chicago native, her career in journalism began as a weekly columnist for a small town newspaper while pursuing her bachelor’s degree in journalism with an advertising emphasis at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Illinois.
Later, she applied her writing skills to a career in corporate advertising, in which she held various positions in the Chicago metropolitan area, including: copywriter at Stone & Adler, a direct mail marketing agency; copy chief on the Spiegel Catalog; head writer for Edward Don & Company (a restaurant supply manufacturer and distributor; creative director at Enesco Imports (a giftware manufacturer, famous for the world-renowned “Precious Moments” collection); and senior writer at a public relations and marketing communications agency specializing in health care technology and real estate.
In 1998, Barbara found her niche in association publishing at WorldatWork, a large nonprofit association in the human resources, compensation and benefits arenas, based in Scottsdale, Arizona. She served as the editor in chief of its award-winning workspan magazine and The WorldatWork Journal, and left her mark by writing three books for its fledgling book publishing division under the WorldatWork name:

In 2008, Barbara joined the National Speakers Association (NSA) in Tempe, Arizona. As publications director, she was the driving force in transforming NSA’s monthly Speaker magazine into an award-winning publication, in addition to snagging awards for Voices of Experience, NSA’s monthly audio magazine.
Barbara shepherded NSA into book publishing with Paid to Speak, published in June 2011, followed by Speak More! Marketing Strategies to Get More Speaking Business, in June 2012. Barbara also attracted many prominent freelance clients through the years, who contacted her based on her excellent reputation and word-of-mouth recommendations.
Barbara is an experienced editorial consultant, as a result of sitting on both sides of the desk—as a publisher and an author. She is known for her high standards, research skills and irreverent sense of humor, which makes even dry subject matter fun to read.
